As you all know I've been trying to get this truck road worthy for my dad. Well, I guess now its for myself until he gets better. Last time it was on the road was about a year or so ago. My uncle drove it low on tranny fluid, and no coolant. Needless to say the tranny was fried and the head gaskets were blown. Visually speaking the head looked like they are in good shape. Me and dad replaced the tranny a while back, also the waterpump and valve seals.

When he left for training in florida me and my brother decided to get this beast on the road for when he got back here. Front brakes had locked up and the head gaskets needed to be changed and it needed a new intake manifold. We put the intake manifold on, I went to training for work, and my brother and mom got the truck to move. Something happened and the truck shut off, more than likely ran out of gas. Which is when we realized the head gaskets were screwed. My brother pushed the truck back into the driveway to avert further damage. Few days later on payday I get the head gasket kit, tear everything down replacing all gaskets etc. Torqued every bolt back down to specs, fresh oil, fresh antifreeze, all the good stuff. Go to start it up and the fuel pump dumps out on us. We replaced that with not 1 but 2 different fuel pumps.

Now the real problem. We replaced the fuel pump twice. New fuel filter and fuel relay. Checked the fuel lines front to back and they dont appear to be crimped in any sort of way. We're not getting any fuel to the throttle body. Nothing at all coming from the injectors. I'm told the injectors were put in last year. Now the truck just keeps turning over but wont start. If we put a little gas in the tb is start to cough and hickup then just goes back to turning over. We got the #1 cylinder to TDC and the timing is close but obviously we still need to adjust it but we need to get the truck running in order to do so. What could be causing the truck to turn over and not start? It would be great to have another set of eyes/ears on this one but its just me and my brother sadly. My brother has tested alot of the wiring harness and connections finding a couple places where voltage drops to about 8.5v. I'm completely stumped and frustrate now. Any help is great.

My new old 1990 Vette has a LPTWS system. It works by the way. Instead of having the sensors on the inside of the wheel as part of the valve stem it has sensors that are strapped on to the centerline of the inside of each wheel.

When driving around town some times the LPTWS light comes on. The PO told me about this but I though how strange. Sure enough it's confirmed that not only does it occur during low speed driving (sometimes) but even the owners manual explains that it will happen.

How wierd is that? What difference does speed make when the sensors measure pressure?

Again a head scratching scenario that only engineers must understand.

My daughter drives a 2001 Ford ZX2. Fun little car. For a 2.0 automatic it's a frickin' hot rod.

The other day her service engine soon light (SES) came on. Since I needed one I bought a scanner to read and reset codes etc. It had a P0171 which is bank 1 lean. So off to the internet I go and it suggested that the MAF sensor is the likely cause. So I got some cleaner and cleaned it. So far so good as it's been driven enough that the SES would have come back on by now.

It seems counterintuitive that a dirty MAF would cause the car to sense a lean condition. My head is telling me that if the sensor was dirty (which it was filthy) that it would cause a rich condition. You would think that since the MAF senses air flow and it being dirty it would sense a reduced air flow resulting in a rich condition. I guess the opposite is true but I'm still scratching my head on understanding a MAF.

Can someone explain?

As I'm sure you guys know, I have been fighting this car for about three weeks and NOTHING has helped. I started out checking the coils and ICM, all checked good. Then I suspected the cam and crank sensor thanks to Paul reminding me how to be a mechanic again lmao. Don't forget, I have had little time to work on this car since I have been working on the other forum and at the base pretty much every hour of the day.

Today is Saturday and I finally decided that either this car is going to run right today, or I'm driving the car out into my field, pouring gas inside, outside, under and all around the car and lighting this damn thing up once and for all. I'm tired of the car. And let me tell you, I almost did. I woke up this morning and first thing I did was pull the coils off the car and took them back since the old ones are fine. I swapped them out for a crank position sensor (CPS) and a cam position sensor. I came home, and installed the cam position sensor. Talk about easy, it's right there beside the WP and one bolt, DONE! Started the car, still missing :dammit:

So I pull the car around to the garage. The CPS is located behind the crank pulley, and you have to pull the crank pulley to get to it. This took about an hour to change and once I changed it, the car fired right up. When I pulled the car into the garage, I had to keep my foot on the throttle to keep it running. This was a good sign that is fired right up. So I held it at 3k, and the friggin thing started missing again. :dammit:

Now, I"m about fed up. It was over 90º today, and I was sweating my butt off. I decided that maybe it was the fuel pump like it was on my car. If there is a bad connection in the pump or harness, it would cause this. Went back to Autozone and rented the fuel pressure tester kit for $150. Came back to the house, checked the pressure and she was holding 40lbs steady at idle. Put it into gear and held some throttle (lowers the vacuum) and she jumped right up to 50lbs. Fuel pump is in great shape.

Then I checked the fuel pressure regulator (FPR). It held vacuum for 5 minutes at 10". It would have held longer but I was using a crappy piece of vacuum hose that leaked. This was just for testing and I did replace it. So it's good and I'm at a loss.

I sit down and chat it up with the wife about what to do. I'm really thinking bon fire over here. Seriously lol. I decide that I have the pressure tester and I forked out $150 for it, so I might as well return it and just say the hell with it and get the ICM for the car. There have been false positives on this test, and it did test good. But, I'm out of options. So I head back to Autozone for the third time in a day.

I take the pressure tester in and exchange it for the ICM and I get a dolla back lmao. This just pisses me off more lmao. I get home, unbolt the coils, replace the ICM and now is the moment of truth... Start the car up, put it into gear, hold the brake and give it throttle, and it's misses like crazy still :dammit:

Okay, so I'm looking for a way to drive this car through the fence and burn it. I'm hot, I'm tired and I'm done with the car. I walk back around and just stare at the engine wondering what in the hell could be wrong. When all of this started, it threw an EGR code, but the EGR is fine. So I said to hell with it. I unplugged the EGR, IAC (Idle Air Control) and the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor). I go in and start the car, hold the brake and put it into gear and hold the throttle. She holds steady RPM.. Sun Of A Bitch. Now I'm down to three things. And only one of them did I ever suspect, the EGR. So I plug the EGR back in and do the same test. I get the same result, smooth running.

So I plug in the IAC. I have seen these things strip gears, get gummed up with carbon soot and cause something like this. Plugged back in, same test, same result. :thinkerg:

And this leaves one... The damn MAF. No codes, no nothing to make me think that is what it is. I plug it in, repeat the test, missing like crazy. So I put it in park and hold about 3k and she is still cutting out, I get another idea.

I go under the hood while it's running and unplug the MAF still holding 3k, no missing, still holding 3k, plug it in and starts missing. Yeah, I found my part. :yahoo:

So tomorrow I'm going to pull the ICM off and see if they will take it back in exchange for the MAF. I have already put one of these on this car a few years ago, and I did it in the autozone parking lot lol. So I may have a warranty on it. So I may be getting my $149 back. Here's hoping. If not, I will have a brand new ICM for any 3.8L GM engine. And these engines are in EVERYTHING lol.

So after all of that, and a day wasted, the car is running great without the MAF plugged in. Yes, this forces the car into speed density mode and is running pig rich, but dammit she's running! So I'm somewhat happy but I'm wondering what my next challenge will be...

I just started bike riding again after a 5 month layoff. Rode moderately for 45 minutes at lunch. I do feel great.

I borrowed a Giant brand on/off road bike. The frame is a little tall for me but the pedal reach is perfect. I rode with the boss. I do like to ride a bit harder than he wanted to go but hey, it's excersise. We only did 4.5 miles.

Through dieting I've lost 40 lbs since my peak of 280 and I'm determined to lose another 40. Having a decent quality bike sure makes it more pleasurable.

My advice...skip the Wal-Mart bikes and go to a bike shop and spend $400-$600 and get a decent bike set up specifically for you. The bike I'm borrowing in riding mode is about perfect but about 2" too tall for me.

My Suteki street bike is good quality but with the skinny tires and old school handle bars and grips are not as nice. My hands go numb after about 20 minutes. We have lot's of little hazards in the desert and lots of "goatheads" from the tumble weeds so thorn resitant tubes are a must. Quite a bit of sand and loose gravel around from the wind too on the streets so larger tires are good for the hazards.

20 miler coming soon. Not sure if I'll push much more than that. After 20 miles around here steep mountains are encountered...LOL
